Reimagining Packaging with Ionic Liquid Technology

RoCo® is pioneering a materials revolution with OTR High Barrier Films and the launch of Singularity Polymers, a spin-off dedicated to redefining performance and sustainability in packaging, energy, and industrial applications.

Breakthrough Barrier Performance

Developed in collaboration with the Rochester Institute of Technology, RoCo’s proprietary ionic liquid compatibilizer transforms bio-based polyethylene into a single-layer, recyclable film with oxygen transmission rates (OTR) between 1–5 cm³/m²·day·bar—a benchmark for high-barrier packaging. This innovation eliminates the need for complex multilayer structures, reducing material costs by up to 50% and streamlining the production process.

What is OTR?

OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate) measures how much oxygen permeates a material over time. Lower OTR values mean better protection against spoilage, oxidation, and degradation, critical for food, pharmaceuticals, and sensitive electronics. RoCo’s films meet or exceed industry standards for high-barrier performance.

Singularity Polymers: The Next Evolution

Born from RoCo’s ionic liquid expertise, Singularity Polymers focuses on a single high-barrier material that outperforms traditional packaging. By integrating ionic liquids—known for their low volatility and high stability—Singularity delivers enhanced resistance to gases, moisture, and environmental stressors.

Applications & Impact:

  • Sustainable Packaging: Extends shelf life and reduces food waste
  • Energy Storage: Improves battery and fuel cell durability
  • Industrial Coatings: Enhances resilience in harsh environments
