What are Ionic Liquids?

Ionic liquids were discovered over 100 years ago, but it’s only been over the past 25 years that their applications have been explored.  As liquid salts, ionic liquids have found application as environmentally friendly solvents in place of hazardous, volatile organic solvents.  As “materials by design,” the structure, cations, and anions of ionic liquids can be tuned, giving targeted properties for applications such as electrolytes, additives, and functional materials.
