RoCo® is driven by our passion to bring positive change and we have demonstrated our expertise in three key areas: materials for CO2 capture; conversion of CO2 into valuable products; and ionic liquids, poly(ionic liquid)s and functional materials.

Ionic liquids were discovered over 100 years ago but it’s only been over the past 25 years that their applications have been explored.  As liquid salts, ionic liquids have found application as environmentally friendly solvents in place of hazardous, volatile organic solvents.  As “materials by design,” the structure, cations and anions of ionic liquids can be tuned giving targeted properties for applications such as electrolytes, additives and functional materials.

RoCo® scientists have decades of experience designing, synthesizing and testing ionic liquids.  In fact, a portion of our ionic liquid product portfolio can be purchased through our Products page.

Companies contract with RoCo® to understand and leverage all aspects of ionic liquids, including using our own ionic liquid products.

Spun off from RoCo®, Carbon Blade is tackling climate change with a revolutionary approach to carbon capture. Our proprietary blades rotate at low wind speeds, circulating an electrochemical solvent that pulls CO2 directly from the air. Compact, scalable, and efficient, this technology offers a practical way to reduce greenhouse gases. Backed by partners like CalSEED and UC San Diego, Carbon Blade is poised to make carbon capture accessible and impactful—one rotation at a time.

Developed in collaboration with the Rochester Institute of Technology, OTR High Barrier Films is set to disrupt the $400B packaging market. Our ionic liquid compatibilizer turns bio-derived polyethylene into a single-layer, high-barrier film that outperforms traditional multilayer packaging. With a target oxygen transmission rate of 1-5 cm³/m².d.bar, it’s fully recyclable, cuts material costs by 50%, and simplifies production. From food to pharmaceuticals, we deliver sustainable packaging that doesn’t compromise quality.

Supported by the Mattress Recycling Council, PU Recycling Tech is reimagining polyurethane waste. Using RoCo®’s chemical expertise, we’re developing innovative recycling methods to break down and reuse PU materials, reducing landfill waste and enabling a circular economy. Still in its early stages, this technology promises to transform industries like furniture and automotive, proving that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.
