Key Applications
It has been used in catalysis, chemical reactions, separations, electrochemistry, and nanoscience investigations. For example, it can be used as a solvent for the synthesis of 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzene, as a medium for the ฮฑ-regioselective prenylation of imine, as a component of mobile phase for the size-exclusion chromatographic analysis of cellulose, and as a catalyst for the Knoevenagel reaction to synthesize coumarins. It can also be used as a template for synthesizing nanomaterials such as mesoporous silica and carbon nanotubes. Moreover, it can be used as a co-solvent to improve the trans-sialylation versus hydrolysis activity of an engineered sialidase from Trypanosoma rangeli. It can also be used as a catalyst for hydrolysis of glycosidases such as ฮฒ-glycosidase and ฮฑ-galactosidase.
