1-Butylimidazole (4316-42-1)
1-Butylimidazole, also known as 1-butyl-1H-imidazole, n- butyl imidazole, or BuIM, is a colorless to yellowish liquid with an amine-like odor. It has a chemical formula of C7H12N2 and a molecular weight of 124.18 g/mol. Butylimidazole is a type of imidazole compound with a five-membered ring that contains two nitrogen atoms at positions 1 and 3.
Butylimidazole is soluble in water and organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone. It should be stored in a cool, dry place away from sources of ignition and oxidizing agents. Butylimidazole is flammable. Therefore, it is essential to handle it with care and avoid exposing it to heat, sparks, or flames. Protective equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, and a lab coat, should be worn when handling this compound.
The boiling point of 1-Butylimidazole is approximately 221-223 °C (based on standard atmospheric pressure)
Key Applications
1-Butylimidazole has various applications as a building block for active ingredients in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and polymer chemistry. For example, it is used as a precursor for the synthesis of fungicides, herbicides, and antiviral drugs. Additionally, 1-Butylimidazole is used as a curing agent for epoxy resins in the coatings, adhesives, and composite industries. It can improve the mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and adhesion of epoxy-based materials. It is also used in Chiral separation. It has been used as an intermediate in the synthesis of cationic cyclodextrin, which can separate amino acids and anionic pharmaceuticals by capillary electrophoresis. BuIM is also used in the synthesis of a variety of ionic liquids as a precursor such as synthesis of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate.
